What is a Cable Gland?
A cable gland is also called a cable connector. Is an accessory in the cable connection for the connection between the cable and the device to ensure the tightness of the internal structure of the cable and the device at the connection. Any device that needs to be connected to a cable needs to use a cable cover to prevent water, dust, and foreign matter from entering the interior through the connection and causing a short circuit.
Structure of Cable Gland
The cable gland is usually composed of an entry thread, cone, ring, secondary nut, outer seal, and sealing nut. In the structural design, a plurality of nuts are used to fix the cable and there are sealing rings to ensure the tightness of the connection, to prevent the long-term use of loose or external force caused by wear and fracture, affecting the correct connection of the equipment and cable resulting in equipment can not work normally.
The Role of The Cable Gland
Cable gland is widely used in mechanical equipment electrical, Marine electrical, anti-corrosion equipment of wire and cable fixing and protection. The equipment needs cables to supply power or transmit control signals to ensure normal operation, and there is usually a corresponding interface on the equipment to connect with the cable. The cable gland has the following functions.
1. Ensure that the connection between the device and the cable is tight and sealed, so that the cable does not cause axial displacement or radial rotation, and the cable is properly connected.
2. Strengthen the fixed cable to prevent disconnection from the device when external forces are applied to ensure the stable position of the cable.
3. Prevent short circuits caused by water vapor and dust in the inner conductor of the cable, which may affect transmission efficiency and safety.
4. Use a cable gland that meets the standard to ensure the electrical connection between the cable and the device.
5. The cable can be grounded. When the cable is loose, the current can be imported to the ground through the ground cable to ensure the safety of equipment and personnel.
How to Use Cable Gland
The cable gland usually follows the following steps when in use.
1. When inserting the cable into the cable gland, remove the outer sheath and insulation layer of the cable to expose the inner metal conductor.
2. Locate the opening of the cable cover and ensure that the cable is correctly inserted.
3. Tighten the fixing nut to ensure that the cable and gland are locked.
4. Connect the other end of the cable to the device port to ensure that the electrical connection between the cable and the device is correct.
5. Check the tightness of the cable gland to prevent debris from entering the connector.
In addition, you also need to check the usage instructions to ensure that the installation operation is normal and to avoid subsequent power-on accidents.
Type of Cable Gland
Common types of cable caps are nylon cable glands, armored cable caps, brass cable caps, PVC cable caps, and waterproof cable presses, among others. Different gland types are designed for different needs.
Nylon Cable Gland
Nylon cable caps are generally used with flexible cables and have different colors in design, and the cables can be classified according to different colors. Nylon material can be waterproof and UV resistant and can be used in outdoor scenes for a long time.
Brass Cable Gland
Brass has a very strong corrosion resistance, and can effectively cope with corrosive liquids or acid rain working environment, to prevent corrosion of cables caused by huge losses. Brass's excellent ductility and high-temperature resistance are also ideal for brass gland covers, which can withstand high temperatures. Explosion-proof brass glands can resist great external impact and can be used in explosive environments or industrial fields.
Armoured Cable Gland
Armored cables are usually used in roads, factories, mining areas, and other scenarios under pressure and external wear, and the mechanical strength of armored cables is increased to protect them. Armored gland is the same as armored cable, there is a layer of metal armored coating on the outside to prevent the cable from being damaged by wear or mechanical external force. Armored caps are suitable for the mining industry and can withstand high mechanical forces. The armored gland is also suitable for use in some harsh environments.
How to Choose Cable Gland
There are many types of cable caps, and you can choose the right one according to the following factors.
1. To determine the type and size of the cable, the gland must first be adapted to the cable in order to achieve the best sealing and firmness.
2. Use environment, different caps are suitable for different working environments. For example, the harsh outdoor environment is suitable for armored glands, and the underwater environment is suitable for waterproof glands.
3. Check whether the application scenario meets the IP68 waterproof and IP69k dustproof standards.
4. Whether the gland will chemically react with some metals.
5. Whether the gland needs to be used with related accessories. Whether plugging heads are needed to close unused channels.
6. Whether it meets industry standards and compliant products can provide safety and reliability during use.
